Mumbai Police Salaries "Skimmed" then Stolen
At the beginning of June 2013, salary accounts of at least 15 personnel of Mumbai police in India had been hacked and money debited illegally from their accounts. It appeared that the money was withdrawn from ATMs located in Greece. Police had their salary accounts with Axis Bank. The director general of police for Mumbai is considering this as a serious matter and discussed the issue with Axis Bank. A team has been created for probing the case. The deputy commissioner of police is heading the team. On the other hand, Axis Bank has also set up a team for investigating into the matter.
A case was filed against this hacking attack with the police station located in Colaba. A total of 37 accounts have been hacked of which 15 belong to the policemen of Mumbai police. The total money which was illegally withdrawn in INR was 15.47 lakhs ($25,900 USD). INR 2.5 lakhs of this total amount belonged to the hacked salary accounts of the 15 policemen serving with the Mumbai Police.
It was reported by an Axis Bank spokesperson that several ATMs of various banks were compromised and transactions which took place from those ATMs led to this cybercrime. The spokesperson also reported that the bank has reversed the impact of this cybercrime to ensure that effected people do not face any kind of inconvenience and that the bank will do everything it can to make sure that the interests of their customers are protected.
Vijay Mukhi, a security expert in India, reported that some hacker managed to clone the ATM cards of the affected users by copying the magnetic strip that is found on the back of the ATM cards. This is commonly referred to as “skimming.” The hacker also managed to get access to the PIN numbers and then sold the information to someone who managed to withdraw money from the ATMs in Greece.
