Pirate Bay Co-founder Sentenced for Two Years

Gottfrid Svarthom Warg, the co-founder of Pirate Bay, was sentenced by Sweden’s Nacka district court for a two-year imprisonment term. This decision came after Gottfrid managed to hack into the computers of a company which was responsible for managing data for the authorities of Sweden. Gottfrid did not only break into the computers but also made some illegal money transfers online.

Apart from this, Gottfrid was also found guilty of another hacking incident whereby he breached the mainframe of a computer company called CSC. CSC was responsible for protecting the IT system of Danish national police called Rigspolitiet. With this breach Gottfrid managed to get a hold of several sensitive pieces of government information.

A Danish co-defendant along with Svarthom Warg, was accused in Denmark for accessing over four million important files during the hacking attack and this gave them the access to personal identification numbers from a database of drivers’ licenses. The two people also gained access to the email passwords of 10,000 Danish policemen. Information about the most wanted men in the Schengen area were also revealed because of this security breach.

Gottfrid has denied all charges but there are chances that he can be handed over to the Danish authorities for the charges of being involved in one of the largest hacking attacks of the country. It is worth mentioning that legal complications for Gottfrid are not new. In 2009 he was convicted of internet piracy and faced a one-year imprisonment sentence after he was handed over to the Sweden authorities from Cambodia.

According to reports from Reuters, Gottfrid made illegal online money transfers in the amount of $4,300 which is equivalent to 24,200 crowns in Danish currency. Apart from this, Gottfrid also attempted to transfer a total of $915,500 or €683,000 during the CSC hacking. Attempts are being made by Swedish prosecutors to shut down Pirate Bay which is one of the biggest torrent networks in world.
