UVa sends student SSNs on mailing labels of Aetna sales brochures

Earlier this month, July 2013, zpproximately 18,700 University of Virginia students' Social Security numbers were visible in plain sight on the address labels of Aetna Health Care sales brochures which were distributed nationwide.  The labels were applied and sent through a 3rd party vendor on behalf of Aetna whom had acquired the address information from the university.  The university had apparently lacked quality control in its data extraction which should not have included nor provided social security numbers.

In response to the failing of both UVa (and Aetna) to conduct a visual inspection of the finished product, it intends to send notification letters and offer free credit counseling services.
