Medical University of S Carolina (MUSC) patient record disclosures

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has terminated 13 employees for snooping through patient records.  MUSC had indicated that employees had been browsed patient records sometimes as the result of a high profile news reports.  MUSC defined 11 of 58 privacy breaches in 2017 as having been the result of snooping.  Other types of breaches had included information being faxed to the wrong clinic.  

MUSC conducts a mandatory annual training for all providers (students included) who have access to health records.  

In 2016, Dr. Joseph Vanlear Dobson was suspended from MUSC without pay for browsing his ex-wife's records over 15 times in a six year span and also for browsing an ex-girlfriend's records 70 times.  Dr. Dobson was fined $440 and required to take a HIPAA course.  He resigned in 2016.
